Welcome to Boarding Happiness!
Have you ever had dreamed of fulfilling your wanderlust? The strong, yearning within the depths of your soul to wander, explore, question, and dream? But at the same time, how can you go abroad as a deaf person?
I ran into one dilemma while traveling: Where can I find more information for deaf travelers or potential deaf expats looking to best utilize the resources the country has to offer, such as free or discounted museum admissions, requesting interpreters for theaters/events, hospitals, or telecommunication options for the deaf? At the same time, how we can meet deaf people and attend deaf social events in any city or country we visit? How can we connect to those people?
This is how I felt about when I had my first taste of traveling abroad on my own outside of the United States when I was a college student working on my undergraduate thesis.
Boarding Happiness hopes to become the most comprehensive source of information online for deaf travelers. There are millions of travel guides and forums available, but not many do address the issues and needs a deaf traveler or expat when heading to an unfamiliar destination.
You can be deaf, hard-of-hearing, Cochlear Implant/hearing aid user, oral, or signing deaf. In the grand scheme of things, the level of your hearing status and preferred communication modes does not matter as we all experience travel differently.
Hearing people connected to deaf communities (teachers of the deaf, interpreters, CODAs, allies of the deaf, etc) are also welcome!
The world is increasingly becoming more globalized. Cultures emerge and influence each other. More people are learning more languages than ever. Now is a great time to travel and explore the world beyond the confines of your hometown.
Bon voyage! Buon viaggio! Have a great trip!
